How GE Vernova’s Houston Learning Center drives plant performance

As the power industry evolves to meet growing demands for reliability, flexibility, and decarbonization, the success of any power plant depends on one constant: the expertise of the people who operate and maintain it. While advanced technology drives the energy transition, it is a skilled workforce that keeps critical assets running safely and efficiently.

At the heart of this mission is GE Vernova’s Houston Learning Center (HLC)—the company’s flagship global training facility. More than a traditional center, the HLC is where OEM expertise, real-world field experience, and immersive hands-on learning converge to prepare both GE Vernova employees and customers for today’s dynamic energy landscape.

Modernization and Capability

The facility was recently modernized to expand its training capabilities, featuring upgraded classrooms, advanced digital simulators, and dedicated maintenance laboratories. These bays house full-scale power generation equipment, including a 7HA.03 gas turbine. This environment allows operators, maintenance technicians, engineers, and plant leaders to move beyond theory, performing inspections, diagnosing faults, and practicing maintenance activities under the guidance of experts. This immersive approach transforms technical concepts into practical skills that can be immediately applied upon returning to the field.

Learning from the Experts

The HLC’s real strength is its faculty. Instructors are GE Vernova’s own technical staff, the same people who install and maintain this equipment in the field, so training reflects how the equipment performs on site, not just how it’s designed to perform.

Equally valuable is the insight brought by our One Field Service organization. Many instructors are veteran Field Service Engineers who have spent decades commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment in virtually every operating environment. They share “lessons learned” from thousands of outages, emergency service events, and plant startups—providing insights that cannot be found in manuals alone.

This same rigorous standard is applied to training GE Vernova’s own One Field Service team. By using the same equipment, procedures, and OEM standards, we ensure that when our teams arrive at your site, they operate from the same technical playbook as your personnel. This shared foundation strengthens collaboration during outages, inspections, and long-term service agreements.

Choosing the Right Training Path

Selecting the best training format depends on your equipment configuration, and operational goals:

Open Enrollment: It is a cost-effective way to train individual staff in a structured environment, providing access to simulators and labs that may not be available on-site.

Site-Specific Training: Ideal for organizations with unique plant configurations. By bringing training to your location, we provide a program tailored to your specific needs. While legal restrictions prevent hands-on training on live equipment, our trainers use site-specific materials and simulators to provide a highly relevant, customized learning experience.

Investing in the Future: The HLC is committed to constant improvement, with recent updates including revamped Controls training that merges maintenance and troubleshooting and upgraded labs for electrical and excitation systems (such as the EX2100/EX2100E).

Looking ahead, the HLC is launching an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program for the 7HA.03 turbine, featuring “learning on the go” simulations. Additionally, our ongoing collaboration with local technical schools and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs helps build the pipeline of talent needed to support tomorrow’s energy systems.

As power generation becomes increasingly digital and interconnected, developing technical talent is as critical as the technology itself. By combining OEM-developed curriculum with hands-on practice, the Houston Learning Center serves as a strategic investment in the industry’s most valuable asset: its people. CCJ
